Meet the Team

Originally from the Falkland Islands, Matias arrived in the UK as an international student in 1997. He earned his MA Fine Art degree from the University of Wales and became a lecturer in fine art, photography and sculpture. He has led foundation programmes for many years and chairs UK and European groups on transition education as well as being a member of Creative UK’s council and contributing to the Qualification Advisory Group for University of Arts London.

Matias joined UPIC earlier this year from most recently being the Vice Principal for Innovation, Quality and Performance at Morley College London.

In his spare time, Matias loves to draw, read, listen to music and visit many of Plymouth’s fantastic outdoor locations.

His favourite place in Plymouth is Plymouth Market where you can enjoy all sorts of fantastic foods and coffee as well as walking the South West Coastal Path.

Tim began his career as a Russian Linguist in Cheltenham, following his postgraduate study at University of Strathclyde. He went on to hold several senior positions in international roles in UK universities, most recently for ten years at the University of Essex.

Having worked at UPIC since 2016, Tim has enjoyed seeing the steady progress and growth of the College and the strength of the relationship with our university partner.
On the weekends, Tim likes to walk as many miles as possible, often accompanied by Flynn, a very enthusiastic young spaniel!

Favourite place in Plymouth: “The National Marine Aquarium is a unique and remarkable facility and resource on the Plymouth waterfront. It’s also very close to the city centre”.

Maria is based in Port Harcourt, Nigeria. She holds a BSc in Pure and Industrial Chemistry and Musical Society of Nigeria certificates, and an MSc degree in Chemistry from the University of Ilorin.

She has worked as a Science Laboratory Assistant (Al-Hikmah University), Music Director (Infant Jesus Academy), Education Counsellor / Operations Manager (Expert Education & Visa Services).

Today, Maria is committed to driving recruitment growth for UPIC with on-the-ground sales activities. She is a loving mother of two lovely girls, passionate about music and spends her free time writing new songs.

Nico was born in Italy and studied MSc European and Euroamerican Languages and Civilizations at Università degli Studi di Parma.

He likes to spend his free time out in the sun and enjoying good quality food.

Amber studied BA (Hons) Journalism, Film and Media at Cardiff University. Following her studies, she decided to work at Camp America for the summer. She returned to her hometown of Bristol before flying to Australia on a 12-month working holiday visa.

With six years of professional experience in Marketing, Amber is passionate about inspiring students from all across the world to start their adventure at UPIC.

Favourite place in Plymouth: “I like to take the ferry from Royal William Yard to Cawsand and Kingsand (Cornwall). These peaceful twin villages have a beautifully secluded beach, shops and local woodlands – just 30 minutes away from the city”.

Ruth is based in Lagos, Nigeria. She is a graduate of BA (Hons) English Language from the University of Lagos and she is currently rounding up her Masters Degree in Labour and Industrial Relations from the University of Lagos.

In previous years, Ruth worked as a Customer Service Executive (Royal Exchange PLC), Student Recruitment Coordinator (Inside Edge Limited) and Student Recruitment Manager (University Partnership North America- Navitas).

Ruth is always excited to inspire students to explore the beautiful coastal city in the South West of England by pursuing their academic dream at UPIC. She said the best part of her role is when she receives a graduation photo from a student that she counselled, or met at a fair. The joy is unmatched!

Favourite place in Plymouth: “I am yet to visit Plymouth but, sure looking forward to seeing how friendly the city is – and being next to the Ocean!”

Dave was born in Plymouth. Living by the sea has inspired him to take a keen interest in the marine environment from a young age. He worked at a Timber Yard until he chose to pursue Higher Education in 2005, enrolling at University of Plymouth and graduating in 2013 with a PhD in Environmental Sciences.

In his spare time, Dave plays the drums in several Punk Rock bands across Plymouth. He also has organised charity music events and festivals in the local area.

As Director of Academic and Student Services, Dave is responsible for all aspects of the Student Journey. He says the best part of his role is the interaction with students – and he is very much looking forward to welcoming you all to Plymouth.

Favourite place in Plymouth: “Wembury Beach. It has amazing rockpools and you can find all sorts of marine life that you won’t see anywhere else in the UK. I used to volunteer as a Rockpool Guide there many years ago and it brings back great memories”.

Tobi was born in England but raised in Nigeria and moved to England to study BA (Hons) Accounting and Finance at University of Plymouth. He went on to study a Masters in Advertising, Strategy and Planning. This extensive skillset has allowed Tobi to create efficient processes that enhance the student experience at the College.

Tobi loves the impact that the University has had on the city. Plymouth has been his home for over eighteen years, and he really likes that he can enjoy Jollof rice at the various Nigerian restaurants in the city centre.

Favourite place in Plymouth: Saltram – It’s the amazing National Trust grounds across the river when you get a train into Plymouth. I love going for walks there with my dog Otis and the family.

Let us introduce you to our most energetic member of staff! Anita was born in Hong Kong and chose to study BA (Hons) Hospitality and Tourism Management at University of Plymouth. She worked in the hotel industry for more than 10 years after she graduated, then she decided to challenge herself by working as Student Letting Team Leader at Clever Student Lets.

Anita like to travel, and she enjoys eating Chinese dumplings! The Maldives is her dream holiday destination.

With her lived experience as an international student, combined with her professional knowledge of University accommodation, Anita is the perfect representative for the College.

Favourite place in Plymouth: “I like to walk to Devil’s Point Park and look out to sea. It’s very relaxing”.

Jake born and raised in Leeds, West Yorkshire, and graduated from Nottingham Trent University with BA (Hons) History and Politics. He has a great interest in sports, particularly his football team Sheffield Wednesday. Over the last few years, his passion for live music has motivated him to study for a degree in MA Creative Events Management.

Jake now works as a Student Experience Officer at UPIC, organising memorable events at the College to bring the student community together.
