SU Presidents at University of Plymouth

More than 50% of all SU Presidents in the last 10 years started their academic journey at UPIC.

This achievement speaks volumes about our students’ determination and the high-quality support from our staff.

Each year, the Student’s Union (SU) elects a new president which has been chosen by students across campus. It’s a full-time paid position, and candidates must launch a campaign to win the majority vote. All candidates must have confidence, strong communication skills, and a passion for improving student life.

Once elected, the SU President is responsible for reporting any concerns to the Board of Trustees. This can range from problems with student accommodation, lectures, or mental health support. It’s also essential that the SU President ensures all social events run smoothly.

In 2013, Kosi travelled from Nigeria to study a Foundation in Computer Science at UPIC. He was the first UPIC graduate to be elected SU President and he’s now thriving in his Tech career.

Then in 2015, Walter joined our Business and Management Foundation course. He had already heard great things about UPIC from friends back home in Nigeria and, just two years later, he was elected SU President.

Fast-forward to 2022, and Dindu Okechukwu arrived at UPIC to study a Foundation in Life Sciences. Now, in the midst of his BSc (Hons) Psychology degree, he’s been elected for a second term as SU President. He shared his motivation for the role in his most recent campaign:

“I am genuinely passionate about every student on this campus, I love our campus, I love our University, I love our city, and I’m going to work tirelessly to ensure that every student voice counts.”

Dindu achieved great things during his first term in office. From giving keynote speeches, leading board meetings, and attending high-profile networking events; his leadership made a real impact. He was even invited to represent the University at the Prime Minister’s residence at 10 Downing Street.

At UPIC, we aim to build confidence and leadership skills from the moment our students arrive on campus. It’s so rewarding to see how they tackle challenges and we’re proud to be part of their journey.

It’s always inspiring to see the progress of our students. From Day 1, UPIC tutors give our students the resources to improve their study skills. I organise social events every semester to help students build confidence and settle into their new home. I’m glad to see so many UPIC graduates stepping up to the challenge and working hard to improve student life on campus.
