Exploring The Southwest Coast Path
An adventurous group of UPIC students took the ferry from Plymouth Barbican to Cawsand and Kingsand.

Visiting Cornwall in the sunshine is the perfect summer activity for international students in Plymouth.
The best part of every new semester is welcoming our students back to College. Of course, we had plenty of new students joining us for the May’25 intake! To help everyone settle in, we invited our undergrads and postgrads to join us on a beach trip. Jake and Anita (UPIC Student Experience Officers) met 26 students at the Barbican Landing Stage to catch the ferry.
After a scenic boat ride, they arrived at a secluded beach and explored the beautiful twin villages of Cawsand and Kingsand. The streets were lined with thatched cottages, cafés, and ice cream shops. Our international student community stayed together to experience it all as a team.
It was a lovely walk from the village towards the forest. This part of the coastal path is adjacent to the ocean, so a group of friends from Saudi Arabia sat on a bench to enjoy the sea view. When everyone approached the woods, they hiked for nearly two hours through the trees. There were so many varieties of plants and wildlife that everyone was stopping to take a look. Selfies were taken and the latest Afrobeats tracks were playing in the background – creating a high-energy vibe.
Once they arrived in Mount Edgcumbe, they spent the rest of the day exploring the 18th Century gardens and the Black Bee reserve. This gorgeous country park is free to visit and it’s spread across 865 acres of land. It was still sunny when the team boarded the ferry back to Plymouth. A few of the students are already planning their next trip..
Taking regular study breaks is essential for Mental Health and Wellbeing. It’s even better if you can use this time to catch up with friends and/or reconnect with nature.
We have plenty more social events on the horizon — so watch this space!!
